Delayed payments will be sorted soon, Ruto tells JSS teachers

scholarship fiasco

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is finalizing the documentation process before disbursing salaries for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers whose payments have delayed for six months now, President Ruto has said.

Speaking during a joint media interview recently, the President said the government was aware of the challenges affecting teachers and asked them to be patient as the process was almost over.

“Education is the most important instrument that sharpens our human capital. My government is committed to make sure that 1.19 million learners access quality free and compulsory basic education as enshrined by article 53 of our constitution,” he added.

The President noted that the government is fully invested to refine the Competency Based Curriculum.

“We intend to make interventions by employing Diploma holders and promote teachers in primary school to end the disaster by September this year. My government is very confident that with the support from my team on education, we will actualize the curriculum and allow the system to thrive,” he said.

Ruto said that the government has already employed 35,000 teachers to bridge the deficit of teachers hence countering the meagre 5,000 teachers employed annually by previous administrations.

He added that they will find ways to employ extra teachers to curb the teacher shortage currently standing at 110,000 teachers countrywide by ensuring budgetary allocation to end the predicament through supplementary budgets.

Ruto said that the government is also seeking to hire extra 1,300 lecturers in the supplementary budgets to curb shortage of lecturers in tertiary institutions.
