Death toll in Kisumu bus crash rises to 25 as President Ruto orders traffic crackdown

President William Samoei Ruto sends condolences and orders a traffic crackdown after a Kisumu-Kakamega Highway crash involving a Naki High School bus ferrying mourners claims 25 lives and leaves 29 injured.

President William Ruto has sent a message of condolence and called for swift enforcement of traffic laws following a deadly road accident on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway that has now claimed 25 lives.

“Our prayers are with the victims of the terrible accident that occurred tonight on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway. May the Almighty give strength to the families to bear the loss. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

We ask traffic enforcers to act swiftly to bring to book those responsible for any acts of negligence leading to the accident and address all traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country,” President Ruto wrote on his official Facebook page.

The accident occurred at the Coptic Roundabout when a bus ferrying mourners overturned. Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga confirmed that four of the victims succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment, pushing the death toll to 25. A further 29 passengers were injured.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina said the bus, which belonged to Naki High School – a public mixed day secondary school located in Upper Nyakach, near Sigoti Town in Kisumu County – was transporting mourners at the time of the crash.

President Ruto’s directive to intensify traffic enforcement is expected to result in targeted crackdowns on high-risk routes.

The tragedy has cast a sombre mood over Kisumu County and beyond, as families mourn their loved ones. At the same time, the injured continue to receive treatment in various hospitals.
