Current recruitment of teachers unfair ,says KNUT

 By Fredrick Odiero

The Kenya National Union of Teachers Kisumu East branch on Sunday July 25, 2021 expressed concern over the manner in which   teachers’ recruitment is being undertaken.

Led by the branch Executive Secretary Mr. David Obuon, the union noted that most applicants for teacher trainees were able to meet the minimum grade of C plain but failed to meet the minimum grades of cluster subjects.

‘We continue to petition for further relaxation of the minimum grades to pegged on the KCSE mean grade of C plain. There are so many applicants but few qualify’ he said.

On the issue of employment of teachers, Obuon said they want to ask for the reconsideration of devolving the exercise to the counties.

He noted that it’s unfair to give interns 30% above other recruits.

‘How does a graduate of 2018 on TSC internship compare with a 2011 graduate who is not TSC internship but on BoM internship? ‘he posed.

Obuon called on TSC to be fair to trained teachers adding that the year of graduation is what should be considered.

Obuon said they will continue to champion for fair industrial practices that allow and accommodate every aspiration in equal measure.
