The 97th edition of the Kenya National Music Festival began on August 4, 2025, in Meru County, drawing participants from across all 47 counties. This year’s theme, “Enhancing the Creative Economy through Artistic Expression for Sustainable Development,” underlines the role of arts in building national cohesion and economic opportunity.
Meru School, Kaaga Girls High School and Meru Teachers Training College, are the event’s hosts with university-level performances taking place at the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (Meru Campus).
The festival has drawn participation from ECDE learners, primary and secondary schools, TVET institutions, teacher training colleges and universities. The final performances are set to conclude on August 12, with a Gala Concert on August 13 and 14, and a State Concert scheduled for August 16 at Sagana State Lodge.
Already, notable performances have captured national attention. Machakos Primary School earned the top position in the African Traditional Cultural Dance (Class 1020H) with an energetic Akamba Kilumi dance, scoring 89 out of 100.
In the post-secondary category, Eldoret National Polytechnic performed a captivating Nandi folk dance, also earning 89 points, securing them first place in their class.

Special needs institutions have also received recognition. Equator Special School from Nyanza emerged the winner in its category, while Shavihiga Special School from Kakamega came in second. These performances featured expressive traditional dance pieces adapted for inclusivity.
Representation from pastoralist communities added depth to the event. Lokichar Girls Junior School brought the spirit of Turkana culture to life with a traditional dance that was well received. Schools from West Pokot showcased authentic Pokot dances, featuring traditional rhythms, ornaments and ceremonial moves.
In a category focused on singing games, Kianda School emerged first, followed by Kericho Primary School and Njegu Primary School, highlighting the vibrancy of playful and instructional song forms.
Oruba Primary School from Migori used a folk performance to educate on healthcare systems, while Mabunge Primary School from Busia presented Nandi folk songs, including “Sister Awake, Close Not Your Eyes” and “Sifa Zake Mwalimu.”
Universities have played a critical role in expanding the festival’s scope. Notable institutions performing include Kenyatta University, University of Nairobi, Moi University, Masinde Muliro University, Mount Kenya University, Gretsa University, Multimedia University and KCA University. These universities have impressed adjudicators with renditions of sacred songs, folk tunes and theatrical compositions.
Colleges such as St. Mark Kigari TTC, Thogoto TTC and Aberdares TTC have taken centre stage with performances centered on education, environmental conservation and national unity.

Expected performances in the remaining days include schools and groups such as Limuru Township, Gilwadzi, Kapkuseng, Eldo Mbaraka, Chumo, and NYS Yatta Primary. Their pieces explore civic themes such as taxation, patriotism and cultural pride, like “Tulipe Ushuru, Tujitegemee.”
Meru town has seen a surge in local activity as learners, teachers, adjudicators and families gather to witness the rich array of cultural expression. The influx has supported local businesses and promoted intercounty interaction.
Adjudicators have praised the increased creativity, improved choreography and deeper interpretation of themes presented through verse, dance and song. Many performances are being documented for future curriculum integration and talent development.
As the festival heads into its final stages, anticipation builds for the gala and state events. The performances continue to celebrate Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage, promote unity and showcase the artistic potential of learners from every corner of the country.
