CSs directed to submit names of advisers to be axed to Head of Public Service

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (fourth right) Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu (third right) and other senior government officials pray before the start of a meeting in the past. CSs have been directed to cut down on size of their advisor team.

All Cabinet secretaries (CS) in different ministries have been directed to select one advisor to retain, effectively paving way for the firing for of the rest.

In a letter signed by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei addressed to the CSs dated July 8, 2024 and seen by Education News, the move is as a result of the directive from President William Ruto who called for revision of the number of advisors assigned to each CS by 50 per cent, that’s trimming them from two to just one.

“By dint of that Presidential Action, the number of advisors assigned to each Cabinet Secretary has been revised from two to one. Additionally, the number of personal staff attached to you will remain as set out in the Public Service Commission guidelines being two (2) staffers,” he directed.

koskei asked the CS’s to submit the names to the Public Service Commission by Thursday, July 11, 2024.

“You are requested to assess the requirements of your office and indicate the advisor you would wish to retain to support you in the discharge of your portfolio mandate. Any advisors beyond the set threshold will be immediately phased out from the Public Service,” the letter goes on.

President William Ruto last week in his speech, while addressing the nation at State House, revealed that there would be a probability of trimming the advisory board.
