Defense Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya yesterday led a massive tree planting exercise at Olentutu Arid Zone Primary School in Narok South Sub-county to mark Mazingira Day, encouraging schools to take an active role in environmental conservation.
Tuya said embracing the tree planting initiative remains one of the most effective ways to conserve the environment and combat the effects of climate change.
“Tree planting is not just about greening our surroundings; it is about securing our future and that of generations to come,” she said, urging schools to integrate tree growing into their daily learning activities.
The CS highlighted the devastating impact of climate change, noting that its effects are being felt not only in Kenya but across the globe.

“Climate change continues to threaten livelihoods worldwide. We must act together to restore our environment before it’s too late,” she added.
The CS revealed that her ministry has already planted over 99 million trees across the country, with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) expected to plant an additional 500 million trees under the national reforestation programme.
Accompanied by various stakeholders, Tuya also encouraged the youth to take part in environmental conservation, reiterating her commitment to transparency and the fight against corruption.
“Our young people have the energy and creativity needed for this cause. Let us join hands and make Kenya greener and cleaner,” she urged.

Area Member of Parliament Kitilai Ntutu praised the initiative, saying his office is committed to supporting similar exercises in schools across the constituency.
“We will continue working closely with the Ministry and local institutions to ensure every school plants and nurtures trees,” said Ntutu.
More than 5,000 trees were planted during the exercise, marking another milestone in the government’s plan to restore the country’s forest cover.
