CS Ogamba mourns Bishop Sulumeti, hails his legacy in faith and education

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has paid tribute to the late Bishop Emeritus Phillip Sulumeti, describing him as a selfless servant of God whose leadership strengthened both faith and education across Kenya.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has joined the Catholic faithful, the Christian community, and the nation in mourning the passing of Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Phillip Sulumeti, describing him as a selfless servant of God who devoted his life to faith, education, and community development.

In his condolence message, CS Ogamba said Bishop Sulumeti distinguished himself as a transformative leader who not only guided the spiritual growth of the faithful but also championed social transformation through education and health initiatives.

“Bishop Sulumeti demonstrated the transformational and impactful role of the church, especially in the provision of social services such as education and health,” Ogamba stated.

He noted that the late bishop’s legacy will be remembered for his tireless efforts in promoting access to education, particularly for girls.

Under his leadership, the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega witnessed the establishment of numerous schools and institutions that have empowered thousands of learners across Western Kenya.

“Through his unwavering commitment to education, Bishop Sulumeti ensured that many young people, especially girls, had access to learning opportunities that changed the course of their lives and communities,” the CS added.

CS Ogamba further acknowledged the bishop’s humility, wisdom, and dedication to social justice, values that continue to inspire many within and beyond the church.

“The Ministry of Education deeply appreciates his contribution to the nation’s development through education and moral guidance. We pray that his soul rests in eternal peace,” he remarked.

Bishop Sulumeti served as the first Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega from 1978 until his retirement in 2014. His passing marks the end of an era for a respected clergy who dedicated over four decades to the service of God and humanity.
