Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba yesterday inaugurated the Kenyatta University newly appointed council members.
Speaking during the event, CS Ogamba said the university council plays a crucial in steering the institutions through ongoing education sector reforms
He assured the council members of the government full backing as they embark on their full mandate.
“We came here to inaugurate the new council and have conversation about the running of the University. Governance starts by the council and the government is 100 per cent behind you,” he said.
The CS also added that significant progress has been made in restoring financial stability in public universities saying that so far 23 insolvent institutions has been reduced to 14 with a target to achieve full sustainability across all 43 universities with the next two to three years.

He said among the reforms in place are the student-centred funding model, a 15-40 per cent reduction school fees for programmes which have ease the financial burden on students and universities.
“At Kenyatta University, out of 10,480 newly admitted students, over 9,500 have already paid their fees. Meru University and Machakos University, have also reported encouraging compliance rates,” he stated.
Ogamba also reiterated that no deserving student shall miss university education due to financial challenges as the government has taken up good percentage on clearing the fees.
KU Council Chairman Dr. Ben Chumo welcomed the new council members, noting the institution’s central role in Kenya’s education system with nearly 50,000 students enrolled.
