CS Duale suspends 40 hospitals over alleged SHA fraud

The Kenya Gazette notice dated August 7, 2025, in which Defence CS Aden Duale gazetted the suspension of 40 hospitals from the Social Health Authority over alleged fraud and system abuse.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially gazetted the suspension of 40 hospitals from the Social Health Authority (SHA) programme after allegations of fraud, system abuse, and non-compliance with operational standards.

The suspension affects facilities across multiple counties, including Nairobi, Homa Bay, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kajiado, Vihiga, Busia, Wajir, and Kirinyaga. It will remain in effect pending the outcome of investigations.

In Nairobi County, the suspended hospitals are Salama Yard Medical Centre, Vebeneza Medical Centre, ABM Specialised Hospital, Imara Healthcare Centre, Dolma Medical Centre, Lengo Medical, St. John’s Hospital Ltd, Edris Premier Hospital Ltd, Bristol Park Hospital, and Selacare.

Homa Bay County facilities on the list include Rachuonyo County Hospital, Kotiende Medical Centre, Nyatoto Rivers Medical Centre, and Archprime Medical Clinic–Oyugis Torics Nursing Home.

In Bungoma County, the affected hospitals are Nabulala Hospital, The Webuye Hospital Ltd, Maxicare Sunrise Ltd Hospital, and Lifecare Hospitals Bungoma Ltd.

Kisumu County suspensions cover Nissi Medical Centre and Dawa Front Healthcare Service.

From Kajiado County, Lemayian Hospital in Kitengela has been suspended.

Vihiga County has one suspended facility, St. Mark Orthopaedic Hospital in Chavakali. In contrast, Busia County has Tanaja Hospital Ltd and Brimaxta Hospital Ltd on the list.

In Wajir County, the suspended facilities include Walalaha Nursing Home, New Manyalo Nursing Home, Merti Nursing Home Ltd., Zamzam Nursing Home – Rhamu, and Nibil Nursing Home Ltd.

Kirinyaga County has the suspended White Rose Medical Centre.

The Ministry of Health stated that the suspensions were issued under Section 48(6) of the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023 and aim to safeguard public funds and ensure compliance with SHA service delivery standards.

CS Duale confirmed that the facilities would remain barred from SHA transactions. At the same time, investigations are conducted, adding that implicated cases have been referred to relevant investigative and regulatory bodies.
