The Cabinet Secretary (CS) in the Ministry of Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Simon Chelugui has underscored the key role played by the Cooperative University of Kenya (CUK) in the sector growth through enhancing professionalism within the cooperative movement.

According to him, the university’s contribution in equipping and retraining the workforce in the cooperative sector is crucial for the sustainability of Saccos.

“As a ministry, we are committed to supporting and ensuring the university’s success by providing necessary restructuring and strengthening,” he said.

Recognizing that many co-operatives in the country are managed by older individuals without formal managerial training or digital skills, the CS pledged to collaborate with the university in making decisions and implementing programmes that will improve the cooperative sector.

The CS was the chief guest at the university’s 8th graduation ceremony held at their main campus in Karen.

During the graduation, which had the theme “Transformative Training for an Empowered Community,” a total of 1,565 graduates received various degrees, diplomas and certificates.

The Co-operative College of Kenya was established in 1967 with a small group of 40 students studying at Allen Road, which is now the Daystar University Campus near Kenyatta National Hospital. Eventually, the college was relocated to Ushirika Road, Karen, where the present Co-operative College stands today.

In 2005, the college took a significant step by introducing its first degree programme, the Bachelor of Co-operative Business, in partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

In 2016, the University College was granted its charter by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta, marking the birth of the CUK, the first of its kind in the country.
