Court suspends SRCs decision to slash ECDE teachers’ salary

ECDE teachers have a reason to smile after courts squash SRC’s decision

Every teacher in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) has a reason to smile after the Employment and Labour Relations Court suspended the implementation of a circular by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) which was seeking to slash the pay of ECDE teachers.

Justice Anna Ngibuini Mwaure suspended the implementation of a circular dated December 21, 2021 until the case filed by Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) chairperson Omboko Milemba is heard and determined.

She gave SRC and the Attorney-General an ultimatum of 14 days to file their responses as the case is scheduled to be mentioned on 24th April this year.

Some counties had already started to implement the advisory since ECDE teachers are employed by county governments unlike their counterparts who are employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as they have reduced the teachers’ salaries y between Sh 7, 383 and Sh10, 803.

On January 13, the SRC wrote to all governors instructing them to enforce the advisory.

The Council of Governors estimates that the new salary and grading structure released by SRC will cost Sh 15 billion per year covering pre-primary teachers and caregivers for the 20221/22 and 2024/25 remuneration review cycle.
