High Court has declined to grant bail to the prime suspect in the murder of Multimedia University, (MMU) student following opposition from the prosecution and the victim’s family
The prosecution argued that Erick Mutinda poses a flight risk and could interfere with key witnesses, noting that he had contacted a witness expressing plans to cross into Tanzania.
Mutinda who is a first-year Electrical Engineering student MMU is accused of strangling Sylvia Kemunto and stashing her body in a water tank at the university.
Kemunto, a first-year student pursuing Mass Communication and Computer Science, reportedly died on March 30, 2025 after she went missing.

The suspect was charged with murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the Penal Code.
More than 19 witnesses are set to testify, including several university students. The court was convinced that releasing him could jeopardize the investigation.
The case is scheduled to proceed in June 23, 2025, with Mutinda’s defense ordered to respond to the prosecution’s bail objection within seven days.
