Mombasa County is in urgent need of 4,000 teachers to end under-staffing in schools in the region, Education News has learnt.
Speaking to Education News from Mombasa town recently, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kilindini branch Executive Secretary, Dan Aloo urged the government to employ more teachers in the country and deploy them to end under-staffing in the area.
“Out of the 4,000 teachers required in the region, 2,000 are for primary schools, 1,000 teachers are for secondary schools, while 1,000 teachers are for ECDE centres,” he added.
The Executive secretary, however disclosed that many schools in the county need more teachers to cope with the ever increasing number of school children
“Many schools in the county do not have enough teachers, while the enrollment of pupils and students have risen, hence making teachers’ work to be rather difficult,” Aloo observed.
At the same time, he asked the government to direct more funds for infrastructural development so as to enable learners a conducive environment.
The Executive Secretary revealed that many school children in the region still learn under unhealthy environment due to lack of physical learning facilities and urged education stakeholders to take drastic measures to enhance effective teaching and learning by providing the necessary learning facilities in schools.
He stated that many schools in the county also lack classrooms for the Junior Secondary School students, and asked stakeholders to cooperate fully and come forward to address the situation, by availing learning facilities so that students can take their lessons effectively.
He attributed dismal performance in national examinations in schools in the area to lack of adequate teachers coupled with lack of physical essential learning facilities.
He called on all education stakeholders to work as a team in order to improve academic standards in schools in the region.
When contacted for comments on teacher shortage, Coast regional Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director Victoria Muoka confirmed that the government recently recruited a total of 2, 192 teachers and trained them to teach in Junior Secondary Schools in Coast region.
