Over 27,000 Early Childhood and Development Education (ECDE) learners in 312 centres in Mandera county will benefit from a school feeding programme following a donation worth Ksh 79 million from the World Food Programme (WFP)

While launching the feeding programme, Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif said it will deliver fortified porridge to the learners on a termly basis.

Accordingly, he said the programme will reduce hunger and acute malnutrition and thus improve education outcomes in the drought-stricken county.

“The ongoing drought has thrown many of us into destitution and in many homes children go to bed on empty stomachs,” noted the county chief.

To ensure effective and efficient implementation, the governor revealed that the education office has been instructed to ensure transparent delivery of the meals.

“Besides the food, the government will provide teaching and learning materials worth Ksh 38 million to improve the quality of education provided by ECDE centres,” said Khalif.
