The 2023 Bungoma County Secondary Schools Games have officially kicked off at the Bungoma High School Grounds in Kanduyi Constituency.
Speaking while officially opening the competition on Thursday, County Chief Officer in-charge of Housing and Municipalities and former teacher Denson Barasa said that Governor Ken Lusaka is keen on ensuring the county government nurtures sporting talents among students.
Barasa presented a trophy and Ksh10,000 for the competition kitty and Ksh5,000 for officials’ refreshments.
The county Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSA) Chairperson Florence Mukangula urged all teachers to desist from engaging non-students in the games warning of disqualification for the schools and interdiction of school heads who allow it.
“I call upon all teams to embrace a high sense of discipline and sportsmanship in these games as our officials will be very vigilant,” she said.
The sentiments were echoed by her Vice-Secretary Andrew Wafubwa who added that any complaints from participating teams should be reported as soon as possible.
Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Bungoma County and Western region Chairman Bikala Situma urged referees to ensure fairness and maintain professionalism during the tournament.
KUPPET Bungoma branch Executive Secretary Augustine Kundu Luketelo said they have engaged the Ministry of Education to add more money towards sports to assist teachers in managing their teams and additional for referees.
The County Quality Assurance Standards Director Caleb Omondi urged officials to ensure that all participating students have valid documents.
“All students playing should take a group photograph with their coaches and Referees and send to the secretary to assist in case of complaints, non-students will be treated as imposters and arrested immediately,” said Omondi.
Some of the participating schools include Bungoma High School, St. Mary’s Kibabii High School, St. Teresa’s Kabula High School, Kapsokwony Boys High School, Bukembe Boys High School and Lwanda Girls High School.
The competitions are slated to end on Saturday, July 8 and thereafter the winning teams will proceed to the Regional level to be held in Kakamega County.
Also in attendance was the County Director of Education Pius Ngoma.
