County official warns parents, teachers against holiday tuition

Kisii County Education Board has sent a stern warning to both teachers and parents who are intending to engage students in holiday tuition classes.

The Board Chairman Prof. Henry Onderi said that whoever will be found practicing will be arrested and arraigned in court because the holiday tuition was outlawed by the Ministry of Education.

“The Ministry of Education declared the holiday tuition unlawful and the decree still stands,” he said.

Onderi who spoke to Education News said that those who practice the exercise do not have a well-tailored syllabus to follow and end up confusing the learners.

He said the holiday is meant for parents to meet and bond with their children.

“Families are built by bonding of members who take stock of the family successes, fears and visions during the holidays when everyone is present,” he said.

The chairman asked parents to take the time to teach their teenage children important basic skills.

“Majority of our children have grown up in boarding schools where even simple tasks are done for them. Let us take this time to teach our children these things,” said Onderi.

He recalled the past days when the discipline of a child rested in the hands of the whole community but has now been overcome by individual family practices.
