Hassan Diba Halake has been elected as the new Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Isiolo branch Executive Secretary during a by election held at Isiolo Boys High school.
Halake garnered 167 votes to trounce his sole challenger, Kala Abdi Risak, who got a paltry 57 votes.
The by elections were occasioned by the resignation of the former long serving executive secretary, Dadhe Boru who resigned after being appointed as Isiolo county government secretary.
“I appreciate the members for electing me to the post and I promise to ensure their rights and interests are well taken care of,” he said.
Timothy Kimathi and Hussein Sora were elected unopposed as the new branch chairperson and Assistant executive secretary respectively.
The by elections were presided over by Assistant KNUT Secretary General Rosalia Mkanjala.
She urged leaders to ensure that issues raised by the union members at the grass root level were communicated to the national leaders for action.
She said the union will continue to address the challenges faced by teachers while in the line of duty as long as they are notified in good time.
“I urge all our members to share challenges they encounter with the relevant offices so that we can address them adequately. Failure to share your problems, the national office might not really know what is happening at the grassroots,” said Mkanjala.
She urged the newly employed teachers to join the union in order to ensure that they have an opportunity to jointly voice grievances.
“I urge the newly employed teachers to join the union in order to ensure the challenges they face are highlighted and resolved in time. This will also strengthen and empower the union. The strength of a union is in its members and when alone, you might not achieve anything,” she noted.
