Seventy students at Kivaa Secondary School in Masinga, Machakos County have received mattresses, bedding and school uniforms from the county government following a fire incident that razed down two dormitories last week.

The assistance, through the Department of Special Programmes, was delivered by Governor Wavinya Ndeti who visited the institution accompanied by high-ranking government officials.

The fire, suspected to have been caused by disgruntled students, damaged property estimated at over Ksh2.4 million.

Speaking at the school, Governor Ndeti cautioned the students against nurturing indiscipline which eventually costs them time, money and leads to poor examination results.

“Today as we take stock of the approximately Ksh2.4 million which has been lost in this unfortunate incident, we are faced with another nightmare on how our students and teachers will make up for the lost time as well as the psychological trauma that might interfere with their capacity to transfer or absorb knowledge,” she said.

While appreciating the Ministry of Education (MoE) for addressing indiscipline in the education sector, Ms. Ndeti said that parents and teachers are expected to set high standards of discipline both at home and at school in order to cultivate good behavior among learners.

“I dare say that indiscipline is the major contributing factor to unrest in schools. Needless to say, school managers and parents have a solemn duty to deal with the cancer of indiscipline so that we bring down cases of student unrest,” she said.

The Governor donated 70 mattresses, 30 blankets, 70 bed covers, 70 bed sheets, 30 pairs of school uniform, and 70 boxes all approximately valued at Ksh500,000.

Further, she wished the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates all the best in their forthcoming exams.

Area MP Joshua Mwalyo and KenGen also assisted the school in cash and in kind.
