Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has commenced the re-tooling exercise of 67,446 teachers on both Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competence Based Assessment (CBA) this Monday March 13, 2023 across all the counties.
The retraining exercise which is expected to end on March 18, 2023 will entail teachers being taken through CBC and CBA frameworks, interpretation of curriculum designs, assessment of Core Competencies and Core Values, Teacher Professional Development (TPAD), appraisal, Junior Secondary School (JSS) Subjects among other areas.
The total number of teachers being re-tooled include 11,192 teachers who had a mean of C+ (regular) and above in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and were recently deployed by TSC from primary schools to teach in JSS.
A total of 30,550 teachers who were recently recruited (regular) in January 2023 with 2,235 teachers in Special Needs Education (SNE) from 745 public primary schools; who will be handled by 196 Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) during the exercise.
A further 22,482 head teachers in regular primary schools as at September 2022 and 745 headteachers in SNE primary schools.
The retooling involve the trainer of trainers (TOTs) and Master Trainers who offer professional support and training; with face to face smart cascade training model involving headteachers and teachers of Languages, Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Technical subjects.
According to TSC, the smart cascade model is done face to face and involve a multi-agency approach with headteachers being retooled for 3 days, teachers being retooled for 6 days by TOTs; while the Master trainers will be tasked to offer professional support during the retooling of teachers.
