Following an increase in hacking in the country attributed to massive tech job layoffs, which have plagued many enterprises in recent years, corporates have been urged to convert hackers’ negative energy into positive energy by creating opportunities for them.
As a result of increased cyberattacks and ransomware, many institutions have been grappling with financial loss, reputational damage, regulatory non-compliance and identity theft, necessitating the need for institutions to protect their systems and customer data from threats.
According to Michael Mugo, the Principal Officer at CIC Microinsurance—CIC Group, the lack of opportunities for youngsters should be blamed for cyber attacks that continue to devastate Kenya’s digital infrastructure.
Speaking at Zetech University during a Postgraduate Luncheon and Launch of PhD in Business Administration and Management, Mugo called on corporates to offer the youth alternative opportunities to restore the public’s confidence in cybersecurity.
In a turbulent world, Mugo emphasized the importance of leveraging relationships, technology, and partnerships in research to drive impactful leadership.
“It will be important as a nation to tap and convert the negative energy in the young people into something transformative to ensure that our corporations thrive,” said Mugo.
“We must leverage technology to create opportunities to take the country forward. We have to embrace our relationships and networks, harness the power of partnerships and collaborations in research to make a lasting impact as thought leaders of the ever-evolving 21st century,” remarked Mugo.

For his part, former Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Joseph Wairagu stated that the government should prioritize data protection to safeguard information and data in the wake of technological growth.
“If we don’t enforce compliance with the Data Protection Act of 2019, it will be misused. The government should put much weight on it to minimize hacking cases,” stated Wairagu.
Zetech University’s Dean of the School of Business and Economics, Prof Peter Kibas, underscored the importance of the PhD programme launch in fostering research that delivers real-world solutions.
To address pressing global challenges, Prof Kibas noted that the programme will help students develop solutions that have lasting impact.
“We are encouraging students to strive to make an impact in their research fields beyond just earning their degrees,” advised Kibas.
The launch of the PhD in Business Administration and Management programme aims to foster innovation and excellence in key areas such as business intelligence and data analytics, strategic management, human resource management, finance and entrepreneurship, and procurement, logistics, and supply chain management.
It is a testament to the varsity’s commitment to equipping professionals with the skills and expertise required to lead in an increasingly complex and data-driven world.
