Construction of Grade 9 classrooms kicks off in Kakamega

Western Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero breaks the ground for Grade 9 classrooms at Kakamega Primary School to kick off the project on its second phase in the region.

Construction of 82 Grade 9 classrooms in Kakamega County has begun, as further plans for an additional 420 classrooms in the second phase being in progress.

The national government has officially begun the initiative as part of a larger project across the western region, which aims to build a total of 2,200 new classrooms.

Regional Director of Education for Western Jared Obiero announced these plans during a groundbreaking ceremony at Kakamega Primary School on Wednesday. The school will receive twelve new classrooms specifically for Grade 9.

Obiero emphasized that this significant project aligns with the government’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities in light of the transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), admitting the delays in the launch due to the thorough procurement process to ensure fairness for all contractors.

“The government has entrusted the school board with managing the funds directly, amounting to 1 million per classroom, plus additional safeguards of 10,000 per classroom for construction site needs,” Obiero stated, underscoring the importance of high quality construction.

Western Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero, head teacher Dickson Wanyangu and other stakeholders during the groundbreaking for construction of Grade 9 classrooms in the region at Kakamega Primary School, which marks phase two of the project.

He expressed his excitement for the positive impact this initiative will have on students and the local economy.

“This school (Kakamega Primary) is recognized as a model institution with a strong track record, and we expect it to set a high standard for all future developments in the region,” he said.

The government aims to complete the classrooms by January, ensuring they are ready for the new school year.
