Construction of CBC classes within schedule, says Magoha

By Fredrick Odiero

Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha has applauded the progress of the construction of Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) classes in the country.

He was speaking at Otieno Oyoo High School in Kisumu county while opening CBC classes at the institution said that the construction of the facilities countrywide was within schedule.

The CS lauded the management of the school under the tutelage of the principal Mr. Solomon Sisuma for the record time taken in completing the project which he launched on 9th July.

He said the remaining 3,500 CBC classes will be completed by end of August.

“Our officers are all in the field waiting for reports. We are working throughout and even after the elections we still have a two-week window to complete our jobs so the public should not be worried,” Magoha said.

Prof. Magoha later on suggested that scouting activities be included as part of the national curriculum in schools as it is one of the ways of instilling the much desired discipline in learners.

This is after watching a drill organized by scouts who had been camping there for a few days.

“I am this disciplined today because of being a scout while in school,” he said.

Earlier on while speaking in Siaya county, Prof. Magoha reiterated that corporal punishment remains oulawed in the country and teachers should only lay their hands on a child in case of self defense.

“The only instance where a teacher can touch a child is in a case of self-defense where the child is threatening to harm the teacher,” he said.

While advising teachers to resort to alternative ways of improving pupils’ performance, he asked parents to take a leading role in molding and disciplining their children instead of abdicating the role to teachers.
