Confusion still rocking UoN after Prof. Kiama’s unexpected return

The unexpected return from leave of University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Stephen Kiama has reportedly caused confusion at the institution.

A section of the teaching staff on Monday demanded clarity regarding leadership as they do not know whether to follow instructions from Prof Kiama or Prof Julius Ogeng’o who was appointed as acting VC when Kiama left office a month ago for a 6-month leave.

According to George Omondi, former Universities Academic Staff Union UoN Secretary, the silence by the university council on the matter has left the entire teaching fraternity at a loss as it has not revoked its earlier instructions.

“We expect that the council comes out strongly and state what position exists in respect to the current goings-on in the university,” he said.

The lecturers said that clarification will benefit the public ahead of the 69th graduation ceremony scheduled for September 22, 2023.

“Immediate action should be taken so that order is brought back to the institution. We see a gap and it needs to be sorted out quickly,” they said.

This comes after a special council meeting that was scheduled for Saturday morning was aborted.

Prof Kiama returned to work on September 1, after just one month of his six-month leave, which began on August 1.
