Concern raised over high usage of drugs by students

By Enock Okong’o

National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) Kisii branch chairman Lawrence Nyaanga has condemned the rampant use of drugs by students in the region and attributed it to bad role models in the society.

Nyaanga, who is a priest and the chaplain of Kisii University, expressed concern that custodians expected to nurture children have turned to social wolves who prey on innocent children.

“The children blindly copy these unrealistic lifestyles,” he said.

He expressed concern about how IEBC can clear people with such uncouth behavior to run for public offices

“How can a learned man promise to cleanse state house with bhang once he assumes office? Since when did bhang become a sacrament?” He posed.

The priest appealed to teachers and the church to remain firm and protect humanity by guiding children to be assertive and keep off from negative peer influence.

He also appealed to children not to have such role models.

“You need to shun politicians who buy you cheap liquor and instead concentrate on your studies,” he advised.

The priest appealed to Kisii county chief of staff to instruct his security men to arrest those buying and selling illicit beer in disguised water bottles.

The priest vowed not to rest until he sees the youth coming to their senses and practicing good lifestyles.

He appealed to well-wishers to join hands and rescue the youth from the jaws of self-destruction.
