Concern as TSC field officers fail to attend KNEC briefing due to promotional interviews

For the first time, Teachers Service Commission, TSC field officers were nowhere to be seen as many sub counties across the country conducted briefing for this year’s national assessments that are scheduled to kick off in a week’s time.

Education News established that this year’s briefing clashed with the start of teacher promotional interviews that also begun this week for primary schools.

In Kericho, Ministry of Education subcounty directors were seen to be in constant communication with those who were believed to be their TSC counterparts who were chairing interview panels in different locations. The briefing exercises which are usually marked by multi sectoral team loaded with heavy speeches full of riot act that emphasized exams integrity were for the first time missing in Bureti, Kericho and Soin Sigowet subcounties as TSC team missed in action.

In Nandi, it was established that some exam officials, particularly supervisors and center managers arrived late for the briefing exercise as they oscillated between interview venues and briefing hall.

“I wonder if I will make it to the briefing venue before the exercise concludes,” replied one teacher at Nandi hills town who said that he was from the interview venue within the town.

Some of the TSC officers who spoke to this channel intimated that the clash of the two exercises was giving them a nightmare because it was their responsibility to ensure that all teachers selected to man assessments attended the briefing without fail.

The report from most briefing centers indicated that some supervisors for KCSE ,KJSEA and KPSEA failed to turn up as there was no close follow up like the rest of the years.

For the first time, KNEC will be administering 3 assessments. Kenya Primary School Examination Assessment (KPSEA) for grade 6 learners, Kenya Intermediate Learners Examination Assessment (KILEA) for learners following stage based curriculum, Kenya Junior School Examination Assessment (KJSEA) for grade 9 learners and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) for form four students. Kpsea,kilea and kjsea begin on October 27 to 31.KCSE on the other hand is expected to start on October 21 and end on November 21 this year.

A total of 1,303,913 grade six learners and 1,145,585 grade 9 learners are expected to sit for kpsea and Kjsea while a total of 996,078 forms four Candidates will sit for this year’s Kcse.
