Parents and guardians in Kisumu County have been called upon to supplement government efforts aimed at providing quality education to learners.
The County Director of Education Ms. Rosemary Birenge said what the government gives, as capitation is not enough unless parents and guardians chip in.
Speaking at Dr. Aloo Gumbi’s mixed secondary school in Kisumu East Sub County, Birenge noted that the national government can only supply minimal resources.
Birenge said the rest must be augmented by parents and guardians.
She said what guardians and parents provide is basically lunch while the government provides other facilities such as infrastructure and members of the teaching staff.
Birenge also advised parents and guardians to monitor what their children do during school holidays.
She praised the principal of Dr. Aloo Gumbi mixed secondary school Mr. George Opiyo for the high levels of discipline exhibited at the learning institution.
Mr. Opiyo said there is a need for a modern dining hall and a parameter wall at the learning institution.
Birenge pointed out that Kisumu County has registered an impressive 99 percent enrolment rate of students in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) after 35, 859 out of 36, 055 were admitted to various learning institutions.
The government had promised to ensure 100% transition of grade 6 pupils to JSS across the country.
She said it was a joint effort by her office in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior through the Deputy County Commissioners, Chiefs/Assistant chiefs, and the Nyumba Kumi to trace and mop out students who were yet to report to school.
Birenge said respective schools have resorted to using some of the graduate primary school teachers to overcome the challenge.
