Community steps in as Tengecha Boys strike sparks security scare at neighbouring girls’ school

Locals armed with rungus guard the perimeter of Tengecha Girls High School after unrest at neighboring Tengecha Boys sparked a security scare.

Tension unfolded last night in Kapkatet on Monday, September 22, 2025, following unrest at Tengecha Boys’ High School spilt over to its neighbouring school, Tengecha Girls’ High School, raising concerns about students’ safety.

When students at Tengecha Boys went on strike, loud commotion and screams from the girls’ side drew immediate concern. The girls cried for help, fearing their school could be targeted.

In response, the local Kapkatet community mobilised and rushed to the school compound armed with rungus to secure the perimeter and reassure the learners.

The community’s intervention also extended to calming the situation at Tengecha Boys, where tensions had boiled over and one of the sstructure was on fire.

Working alongside school staff, residents helped to restore order and prevent the unrest from escalating.

This comes just days after chaos at Litein Boys High School, where a dormitory fire destroyed critical documents, including uncollected KCSE certificates, sparking nationwide condemnation.

That incident has heightened sensitivity around school strikes in Kericho and Bomet counties, with locals determined not to let a similar tragedy unfold at Tengecha.

Leaders have hailed the community’s quick action, pointing out that the partnership between residents and schools is vitals in protecting learners.

By dawn, calm had returned to both schools, with extra patrols stationed around the area to prevent further incidents.

This follows unrest at Litein Boys High School erupted on the night of Sunday, September 21, 2025, when students went on a rampage and torched dormitories. The blaze destroyed critical documents stored in the administration block, including uncollected KCSE certificates belonging to recent graduates.

Computers and other equipment were also reduced to ashes. Although no lives were lost, the destruction was extensive, and the school was forced to shut down indefinitely.
