Community around Moi University issues public apology to former VC Laban Ayiro

The community around Moi University has issued a public apology to former Vice Chancellor (VC) Laban Ayiro for the disrespectful manner of his ouster.

In a video circulating on social media, community leader Richard Tarus acknowledged Ayiro as the most effective leader the university has ever had.

Expressing regret for not recognizing Ayiro’s merits during his tenure, Tarus formally apologized on behalf of the locals.

“I want to apologize on behalf of the locals to Laban Ayiro,” he stated in the emotive video, adding: “He was the right person for Moi University’s VC. We ask for forgiveness without any fear,” he said.

Ayiro, appointed as acting VC in 2015, faced opposition from North Rift leaders during his subsequent three-year term.

Notable figures such as former Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos, MP Oscar Sudi and Senator Jackson Mandago contested Ayiro’s appointment, fronting for Prof Isaac Kosgey instead.

Ironically, the same locals are now calling for the removal of the same Kosgey, citing poor management and leadership at the university.

Specific concerns raised include issues around alcohol and drug abuse within Moi University, with accusations that the current VC has not adequately addressed them.

“The VC must go home. There is alcohol and drug abuse inside Moi University, and the man in charge is not bothered to snap it out,” said a local.

Ayiro has since assumed the position of VC at Daystar University. Recently, he was honoured with an award as the Best Vice Chancellor in Kenya at the Uongozi Awards on November 24.

Daystar University is now recognized as the most preferred institution of higher learning, taking the accolades at the East African Employability Summit and Career Awards 2022-2023.
