Commissioner fears for school children as floods hit Nyamira

Nyamira County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatta.

Nyamira North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Florence Onunga has urged parents to ensure the safety of their children to and from school even as they count losses on their crops due to the ongoing heavy rains in the region.

She reminded them to organize themselves properly bringing attention to the Weatherman’s prediction of prolonged rains heralding the El Nino season.

“I ask parents and teachers to take care of their children against risks including flooding rivers,” she said.

The DCC noted that the County has been experiencing rain since last month and it has been increasing gradually.

She advised children to avoid taking shelter or playing in open grounds during the rains.

The administrator further asked parents to provide their children with warm clothing to reduce risks of contracting the cold, flu and other related ailments.

According to resident James Nyamancha, the heavy downpour that lasted four hours on Friday destroyed a lot of crops leaving them with little hope of harvesting anything in this season.

He said that the farms were flooded with hailstones which contributed to massive landslides but noted that no casualties had been reported so far.

The most affected areas include Bombo, Nyamusi and Kebabe.
