Tana River county Commissioner Omar Beja has urged chiefs and their assistants to ensure all school age going children are enrolled in nearby schools immediately.
Beja noted that more than 23,000 school age going children are out of school.
He further lamented that local leaders and other stakeholders have ignored education hence the low academic standards in the region.
The transition rate from primary to secondary schools is 93 per cent, transition from primary to secondary is 99 per cent while the transition from secondary to university is at 2 per cent.
“It is our duty to enrol our children in schools,’’ the commissioner said, adding that through concerted efforts from all stakeholders, enrolment in schools and consequently the academic standards in the county will improve.
The county commissioner called on security personnel to work with community leaders to bring to book those selling drugs to students.
He accused some security officers of colluding with drug barons and traffickers and urged residents to report such cases to him for disciplinary action.
