Martin Ruto, reflects on the just-concluded KNUT West Pokot Branch elections, highlighting the decisive role played by classroom teachers and digital communication platforms in shaping the outcome.

The just-concluded KNUT West Pokot Branch highlighted the crucial importance of classroom teachers and new technology in the KNUT Elections.

Classroom teachers openly discussed union matters, especially during lunch break and after classes, on whom to elect and whom not to elect.

Dorcas Cheyech Lotome (pictured above), the newly elected West Pokot Branch Executive Secretary, being a classroom teacher, made her campaigning easier by interacting with classroom teachers in the staffroom and at neighbouring schools.

Classroom teachers strongly influenced one another about the importance of change, especially regarding the Executive Secretary position, which was frequently referred to as a retiree.

The elected Executive Secretary, herself an English and Literature teacher, strengthened her communication skills as she passed the manifesto message to the teachers.

In fact, her eloquence in language was appealing to the teachers whenever she climbed the campaign platform.

As West Pokot County Sports Secretary, Lotome freely interacted with games teachers who were also classroom teachers; therefore, during campaigns, her work became easier.

Severally, she accompanied the West Pokot County team to the National and East Africa sports competitions.

The use of bloggers in communications and the display of posters as campaign mechanisms clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of new technology in the West Pokot Branch Elections.

Communication messages and the display of candidates’ pictures and posters were interesting throughout the campaign period and after the elections for the winners.

So, going forward, the classroom teachers who actively advocated for change and the new technologies of phone messages, what’s up groups, and bloggers should not be underestimated in the KNUT Campaigns.
