CJ Koome asks TSC to hire more teachers to Starehe Girls Centre

Chief Justice Martha Koome applauds after launching a statue at Starehe Girls Centre

Chief Justice Martha Koome has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to allocate more teachers to Starehe Girls Centre in Kiambu as they have been hiring teachers from their budget.

Speaking on Saturday during the 18-year anniversary of the school, Justice Koome said that there is no need for the Board of Trustees (BoT) to continue hiring teachers from their pockets yet the government can offer the teachers for free.

“I will accompany the Board of Trustees to TSC to ensure that you get more teachers. There is great work going on here and we should not let the trustees suffer while hiring teachers when the government can provide teachers,” Koome said.

She noted that the top performing national school in the country relies 100% on charity as it assists bright and needy students from across the country to access education.

TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi said that the Commission has recruited over 50,000 intern teachers in the current financial year to cater for Junior Secondary School (JSS) and is planning to promote over 50,000 teachers by November.

He said that he will work with the school’s BoT and Principal to reduce the teacher shortage where the whole school depends on 48 teachers.

The school Director Sister Jane Soita said that the school has a capacity of 800 students but agreed that teacher shortage was a challenge in addition to insufficient infrastructure.

“We are glad that we have a facility that can host over 800 students and my request is that well-wishers come on board to put up the enough infrastructures and provide mentorship and sponsorships for our girls,” Soita said.

She said that in a year, the school has to conduct three major fundraisers which include the annual golf, annual dinner and annual charity walk events.

BoT Chairperson Eunice Mathu said that the school needs to have a self-sustainability system to reduce dependence on donors.
