The civil society in Kisumu wants all bars operating within the proximity to learning institutions in the area closed to protect children from exposure to alcohol.

They have further called for strict enforcement and enhanced legal provisions for a total ban on alcohol selling within a 500-metre   radius   of   schools   and   institutions   of   learning.

The group has said the same should be implemented near churches and areas frequented   by   children as it is easy to expose vulnerable populations to alcohol.

The statement was signed by  civil society representatives; Benjamin Odhiambo of Blue Cross Kenya Students Campaign Against Drugs (SCAD), Brian Magwaro, Manager Blue Cross Kenya,  and Lilian Gitau, Executive Director, Renaissance Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre.

They noted that the National Authority for   the Campaign against Alcohol and   Drug   Abuse (NACADA)’s statistics indicate that 3.2 million Kenyans consume alcohol.

The group said the country is now   increasingly   experiencing   problems associated with   alcohol   consumption.

Recently, they said, the media has reported uncountable number of deaths associated with alcohol, saying there are that go unreported.
