Civil rights group condemn banditry as examinations enter second day

A Baringo Civil Rights Society has decried the rampant attacks in the area even as Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations hit its second day.

Speaking at Kabarnet town, Janet Ongoli, the group’s Chairperson entreated the CS Dr. Fred Matiangi on the safety of candidates, urging him to urgently intervene as the situation worsens in a case that has seen examinations disrupted in some schools.

The society further asked the CS to visit the area to assure the residents of their safety and also see for himself the security situation in the area. The group has asked for a long-lasting solution to the security issue.

“If Dr. Fred Matiangi is not assisting us, let him resign. Because we, the people of Baringo are also Kenyans and we want to be treated like other Kenyans,” said Janet Ongoli.

Suspected Pokot bandits on Monday laid an ambush on two schools; Kapkusum and Karne Primary Schools as examinations begun, firing a number of bullets and forcing candidate who were sitting their papers to run for their dear lives.

The State of insecurity in those unstable areas is worsening day by day as droves of people have begun to flee their homes.

They are now appealing to the government to send sufficient security personnel to restore peace in the area for them to return to their normal lives.

“Why are Tiaty Sub-county leaders so silent on the ongoing onsaulght but we all know the criminals come from their area?” Questioned and irate Kipruto Kimosop, the MCA for Mochongoi Ward, the area affected by banditry.

According to the MCA, while speaking to the media earlier today, he said they were planning to hold a peacefully demonstration in Kabarnet town and other parts of county.

Yesterday, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof. George Magoha denied claims that the ongoing examinations were disrupted by the bandits.
