Church leaders from the South Rift region have called on the youth in the country to focus on initiatives that can help improve their livelihoods and secure their future instead of indulging in reckless drugs and substance abuse.

The clerics expressed concern over the rising number of young people engaging in drug use, terming the trend alarming and dangerous.

Led by Reverend Elijah Koech, they warned that continued abuse of drugs poses a serious threat to the future of the youth if urgent action is not taken.

“The rate at which our youth are getting into drugs is worrying. If this trend is not addressed immediately, we risk losing an entire generation,” said Rev. Koech.

Speaking in Bomet town, the church leaders called on teachers to take a leading role in sensitizing students against drug and substance abuse while still in school.

“Teachers are in a strategic position to guide learners. They should be at the forefront in educating students about the dangers of drugs,” Koech noted.

He further outlined some of the commonly abused substances in the region and appealed for joint efforts from parents, schools, religious institutions, and the government to curb the menace.

“We are seeing abuse of alcohol, bhang and other harmful substances. This problem requires collective responsibility if we are to win the fight,” he said.

The leaders also demanded tough action against drug traffickers, noting that some of those involved are well known within communities.

“Those supplying drugs to our children must face the full force of the law. The future of our youth must be safeguarded by all means,” Koech added.

The call comes even as the government, through the Ministry of Interior, continues to carry out operations across the country aimed at combating alcoholism and drug abuse.

Church leaders in the region reiterated their commitment to support efforts geared towards protecting young people and steering them towards positive and productive lifestyles.
