Children’s officer raises concern over growing child neglect cases

By Enock Okong’o

Kenyenya sub county children’s officer Solomon Maisore has decried the high rate of child negligence in the region.

He attributed the vice to ignorance of many parents concerning knowledge of children’s rights as enshrined in the constitution of Kenya.

“The media should educate the society about children’s rights,” said the officer.

Speaking in his office in Kenyenya, Maisore revealed that 37% of the cases they receive are of parents who fail to provide for the basic rights of their children.

He gave an example of a parent from Magenche ward in Kisii county who refused to pay school fees for his secondary school daughter because she wasn’t his biological child.

He asked t chiefs to make use of their public barazas to educate parents that access to education is a basic right of every child and that parents who violate the law stand to be arrested.

He commended Mokubo location Chief Mr. Samuel Omambia for launching a house to house campaign of urging parents to take their children to school.

He asked chiefs from other locations to follow his example.
