Agnes Ochilo, the wife to Migori County Senator Hon. Ochilo Ayako, has called on parents to offer appropriate parental guidance and take responsibility for their children’s well-being to ensure they are on the right track.

Mrs. Ochilo noted that it was a pity that most learners are lured into immoral behaviors by their peers due to poor parenting.

She said most of the parents have more time for their work than they have for their own children creating very little interaction between the two parties.

She revealed that the economy has greatly affected the way of life hence forced many parents to spend more time sourcing for means of survival.

“Parents must come up with measures to ensure they keep track of their children while at school as well as at home and also be able to monitor the kind of friends their children are relating with.” She said.

She also warned parents to be weary of predators preying on their children and ensure their children are able to complete their education for a better future.

The legislator’s’ wife who lauded the “Mama Ida Odinga Foundation” for ensuring that girls are kept in school by distributing sanitary pads and providing peer counseling also encouraged learners who became young mother’s to go back to school in order to achieve their dreams.

“I urge parents whose girls have given birth to support the girls so that they can go back to school. Getting a baby while at school is not the end of the world for these girls they still have a chance to make it in life.

Through education our children are able to change the narratives and status of our homes and families which would also impact the growth of our society.” She added.

Mrs. Ochilo also encouraged parents to follow up on their children’s’ progress at school by contacting the teachers on phone as COVID-19 protocols prevent gatherings and schools don’t call for parents meetings.

“Let’s also exercise the culture of Christianity and making our children go to church and have bible teachings to gain the values of life.” She added.

Mrs. Ochilo also challenged leaders to find a way of ensuring students who are currently in boarding schools and are holders of the national identity card are given the chance to register as voters through ensuring that the independent, electoral and boundaries commission voter registration are done in schools.

“We need the assistance of both leaders and school heads to ensure ID card holders in schools are given the chance to register as voters.” She said.
