The Cabinet Secretary for Labour Florence Bore has urged communities to avoid discriminating against children with mental disabilities but instead to direct them to utilize government facilities for essential life skills services.

Speaking during her visit to the Manga Children’s Remand and Correction and Rehabilitation Centre in Nyamira County, Bore noted that these children are like tender trees that have to be straightened diligently as they grow.

The CS’s visit followed her participation in the National tree planting exercise at Nyasa Secondary School in the region.

“Residents should incorporate tree planting into their traditions as part of  environmental conservation,” Bore appealed.

Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo, alongside Kititu Masaba Member of Parliament Clive Gisairo and several Members of the County Assembly, welcomed the Cabinet Secretary during her visit.

Governor Nyaribo urged residents to plant at least one tree daily at home, emphasizing the importance of setting a positive example for children.

“Children learn better by seeing, so let us instill in them the values of caring for our environment through our actions,” he stated.

He further recommended the planting of indigenous trees for their environmental friendliness, cautioning against planting water-intensive varieties like eucalyptus near rivers.

Expressing concern over the drying of rivers due to eucalyptus trees, Governor Nyaribo issued a one-month notice for residents to remove all eucalyptus trees from riverbanks, warning of legal consequences for non-compliance.

Over 10,000 tree seedlings were planted during the exercise in Nyamira County highlands.

In a related initiative, Eng. Adams Mochenwa led residents of Borabu Constituency to plant 2000 seedlings at Mokoni Sub-location.

Mochenwa, a former gubernatorial contestant, emphasized the aesthetic, fruit-bearing, and construction benefits of planting trees, urging residents to embrace water harvesting during the current rainy season for future use during dry periods.
