Nursing students at Kaimosi Friends University officially kicked off Nursing Week 2025 on a high note, launching a packed week of service-oriented and educational activities under this year’s global theme: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies”.

The Chair of the Nursing Department, Dr Asiko Anne, inaugurated the week’s celebrations with a keynote address that paid homage to Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Drawing parallels between Nightingale’s revolutionary practices during the Crimean War and today’s healthcare challenges, Dr Asiko emphasised the enduring relevance of hygiene and infection prevention. “Nightingale rose above the norms of her time,” she said.

“Her legacy is a torch each of you now carries.”

The programme, designed to blend community outreach with environmental action, features a series of initiatives to improve public health and promote ecological awareness.

Free wellness screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar levels, targeting students and campus staff, are at the top of the agenda.

A clean-up campaign will also sweep the university grounds. At the same time, nursing students will deliver health and hygiene education to young learners during a scheduled visit to Kaimosi Friends Primary School. Participants are set to plant 200 trees before the week concludes to leave a lasting green footprint.

Speaking to attendees, Dr Asiko urged nursing students to fully embrace the activities lined up, highlighting their importance beyond the classroom.

“Every tree planted, every person educated, and every hand extended this week is a step toward a healthier, more resilient future,” she said.

Nursing Week 2025 is a tribute to the nursing profession and a platform for advocacy and action. Kaimosi Friends University reaffirms its commitment to producing nurses who are not only clinically skilled but also socially and environmentally conscious.
