CUE issues guidelines to review teacher education programmes

Universities’ commission issues guidelines to review teacher education programmes
CUE Chief Executive Officer Prof. Mike Kuria

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has developed guidelines to review Teacher Education Programmes (TEPs) to align them to the new Competency Based Education (CBE) being implemented in the country.

The guidelines will facilitate universities to align curricula for university TEPs to the Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF).

In a letter to Vice Chancellors and Principals of Universities and University Colleges dated January 9, 2024, CUE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Mike Kuria indicated that the development of the guidelines had been done with adequate engagement of relevant stakeholders, followed by public participation and sensitization forums.

“Universities offering TEPs are required to apply the guidelines issued to revise the curricula for TEPs, ensuring the review addresses emerging issues in teacher education,” the letter read.

They are also required to undertake a needs assessment, with the engagement of relevant stakeholders in the curriculum review and put in place appropriate academic resources, collaborative arrangements and administrative structures and strategies to support the TEPs under CBE.

The revised curricula should be submitted to the Commission for accreditation by March 1, 2024.

CUE is mandated to promote the objectives of university education which are; to promote, advance, publicize and set standards relevant in the quality of university education, monitor and evaluate the state of university education systems in relation to the national development goals, develop policy for criteria and requirements for admission to universities and regulate university education in Kenya.
