A teacher who gave a Grade 4 pupil 107 strokes of the cane in Nyamira has had his charges changed from assault to attempted murder.

After the boy was admitted at Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital and treated for the injuries, police are now preferring attempted murder charges against the teacher.

According to police investigations, Jackson Mobisa Marucha of Riang’ombe Primary School in Nyamira County caned the minor for losing his shirt when he hung it out to dry.

When the suspect sensed danger of being arrested, he went into a hideout; but human rights groups, the ministry and the community could not rest until the police arrested him.

Five of his colleagues were also apprehended to help with investigations, who have since recorded statements at Manga Sub-county Police Station.

The case will be mentioned again on July 29 at Keroka Law Courts in Nyamira County.
