Champions crowned at grueling Nairobi regional games

Ofafa Jericho, Nairobi School, Hillcrest, Hospital Hill, Dagoretti Mixed, Dagoretti High and Our Lady of Mercy (OLM) South B were crowned champions as this year’s Nairobi Regional Term One games ended at St Mary’s School, Nairobi School and State House Girls.

The champions secured their tickets to the 2023 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term One games set for Hill School Eldoret from April 24 to April 29. Hard work, dedication and investment into the sport came to fruition for Ofafa as they routed former Nairobi titleholders Upper Hill 18-0 to be crowned rugby 15s champions.

This was a second time in a row that Ofafa prevailed over Upper Hill having beaten them in last year’s rugby 7s final. Ofafa are now Nairobi’s champions in both the longer and shorter versions of the game. Jeff Andingo, James Ndura and Telvin Aliongo touched down in the first half to give Ofafa a 15-0 half-time lead. Steve Otieno’s penalty conversion was enough for Ofafa to seal victory and a ticket to the national games.

Nairobi School and Hillcrest recaptured their boys’ and girls’ hockey titles after triumphing in their respective final ties. The two sides had last won the regional trophies in 2019 but failed to defend last year when the games resumed after the Covid-19 pandemic break. Hillcrest beat last year’s champions Mwiki Secondary 2-0 while Nairobi School edged out Hospital Hill 3-1 in a penalty shootout.

Bumpy! Best describes Nairobi’s School’s return to the top having survived shootouts from the quarter-finals stage. Having played to an all-one-draw in regular time, Nairobi School goalkeeper Brighton Makori shouldered the responsibility of saving his side. He did not disappoint, saving three penalties to hand his side victory. Clinton Atoi, Victor Muthomi and Mohammed Fofana did not deliver outwitted Hospital Hill shot stopper Moses Waweru to hit the board and secure the win.

In handball, Hospital Hill and Dagoretti Mixed successfully defended their boys’ and girls’ titles respectively. Hospital Hill beat Highway 19-15 whereas Dagoretti Mixed routed Buruburu Girls 32-9 in the final.

In basketball, Dagoretti High extended their dominance to secure their fourth title in a row after beating Jamhuri High 67-44 while OLM dismissed Raila Educational Centre 32-28 in the boys and girls’ final encounters respectively.

Nairobi also selected a composite team that will represent the region in athletics. Top performers in track and field events will fly the region’s flag at the national games.
