Heads of Department (HoDs) from schools across Mandera County are currently undergoing a five-day training programme aimed at preparing schools for the ongoing rollout of Competency-Based Education (CBE) at the senior school level.
The training, which runs from April 7 to 11, is being supported by the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA).
The primary focus of the training is to enhance leadership skills and equip HoDs with the necessary knowledge to assist teachers during the shift from content-based teaching to competency-based learning. Key areas covered during the training include understanding the new curriculum framework, interpreting curriculum designs, and aligning teaching plans with the expected learning outcomes.
The HoDs were also introduced to modern assessment methods, with an emphasis on practical and continuous evaluation techniques, to ensure students’ skills are properly assessed.

The training highlighted learner-centered teaching approaches, such as inquiry-based learning, and the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in classrooms. They were also introduced to emerging tools, including artificial intelligence, to enhance lesson planning.
Thuo Karanja, the CEMASTEA Coordinator for Performance Contracting, emphasized that the training would better equip HoDs to mentor teachers, improve classroom practices, and ensure the smooth implementation of the new curriculum.
Trained HoDs are expected to cascade the knowledge gained to teachers within their schools, guide school leadership through the transition process, and monitor progress in the implementation of CBE.
The CEMASTEA training is part of a broader national effort to strengthen education reforms and promote skills-based learning in the country.
