Nakuru’s Anestar Boys High School is celebrating a major academic milestone after three of its students qualified for the National Math Olympiad, as announced through the school’s official social media pages.

The three Form Two students have earned national recognition after qualifying for the Kenya National Mathematical Olympiad (KMO) Round Two.

The trio is part of a select group of 38 students nationwide who advanced to the prestigious competition’s next stage.

The second round of the KMO will be held at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) in Nairobi, from August 14 to 19, 2025.

Students who excel at this stage will qualify to represent Kenya in the Pan African Mathematical Olympiad, which will be held outside the country. Top performers there will proceed to the global stage at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

The school gave the three a thumbs up, vowing to support them all through. “Congratulations to our own for shining the star of Anestar bright, we assure them that we shall support them all through,” the institution said.

The Kenya Mathematical Olympiad is a high-level competition that identifies and nurtures mathematical talent among secondary school students. It is jointly organised by CEMASTEA, the University of Nairobi, and the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) based at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Began in 1998, the SMASSE (Strengthening of Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education) pilot project was housed at the Kenya Science Teachers College (KSTC). The project has evolved to the CEMASTEA.

CEMASTEA took over in 2004 and was officially recognised under policy frameworks in 2005.
