Majority of Competency Based Curriculum, CBC, learners prefer not to pursue science-related subjects in senior schools but art, languages, literature and pursuing careers in the creative economy.
A new study survey conducted by Central Careers between July and April, 2025, involving 16,045 learners across 147 schools in 16 counties on grade 9 students revealed that most CBC learners are likely to shun Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

On gender breakdown, it shows that more female learners (9, 144) than male learners (6899) were assessed, whereby on this total 5315 students, 33 per cent chose stem pathways. The largest number, (6275) students, 39 percent, preferred Social Sciences.
The Central Career CEO, Joseph Muraya thus stated that based on the data, the goal of having the majority of learners pursue the STEM courses could be unrealistic.
He also added that in the Social Sciences stream, most students expressed interest in the foreign languages, humanities and business- related studies.
