CBC gifts hope to P1 teachers who had stagnated in grades

TSC P1 TEACHERS

The Junior Secondary School (JSS) has come with good news for P1 teachers who had met the secondary school academic requirement but stagnated in primary schools.

Many teachers had given up on university studies since the TSC halted teacher promotion on academic grounds in 2014.

Josephine Mwende, a teacher recently deployed to Kandwia JSS from Gai primary school in Kyuso Sub
County in Kitui County, says,

“While some who had started university courses dropped out of campuses to focus on other issues,
the more optimistic continued to finish degrees with a hope of better days ahead,’’ said Mwende.

She added that with the skyrocketing cost of living, many teachers opted out; they lost hope.

However, with the present CBC set up posing for highly educated teachers for JSS, the dream of many
teachers is coming true.

However, Mweni notes that since many teachers especially women prefer working near their homes, they don’t apply
for TSC advertised opportunities.

She points out, “With the introduction of JSS teachers are happy, their hopes have been raised, and
teachers’ admission in local universities has gone up.’’

‘’Their prayer now is for TSC to deploy them to JSS to cut in the huge teacher shortage being experienced in JSS,’’ said BM

According to Mark Chemour, a former teacher of Tetu primary school in Garissa perhaps the TSC needs
to look at the C+ grade for degree holders since many teachers upgraded to degrees without C+.

BM concurs, saying besides many candidates not performing well in exams for various
reasons, at a particular given time; new subjects introduced in grade 7 like life skills and pre-technicals
can be handled by primary school teachers.

“TSC should reconsider degree-holding primary school teachers with C grades in KSCE instead of insisting on C+ in
English subject for such promotion.” She said
