As the country gears towards digital learning, an application has been put in place to simplify teachers’ work.
According to the Verb Education CEO Mike Kipkorir Bill, the app is useful in learners’ assessment and record-keeping for teachers in Kenya’s new Competency-Based Education Framework (CBEF).
“Teachers using this app will no longer need a pile of books and files on their tables. There will be no loss of work, misplacement, books being feasted by ants among many other advantages,” said Bill.
Speaking in his office, Bill added that the app is purely designed for CBC classes. It simplifies the process of assessing students using a commonly used type of assessment called assessment rubrics thus giving detailed reports without burdening the teacher.
The app makes it possible for teachers to produce reports giving them insights into students learning in ways they could not do previously. Education managers can give reports on students’ and teachers’ performance among other solutions.
“As we all know, the new curriculum brought about big changes in the way teachers assess learners. In the first four grades of primary school, there are unique learning activities across all the subject areas that each student must perform and be tracked but only a handful of activities are tracked. This denies the students critical feedback in their development,” said Bill.
The CEO observed that assessment of learners and record-keeping in the country’s basic education is still done by hand thus tiresome.
Major benefits of the app are that it eliminates repetitive works, makes record keeping meaningful, obtaining detailed reports, gives printable and sharable reports as well as using KICD templates.
However, the app can only be accessed through an internet connection but being lightweight, it can’t consume more than 5MB.
Muange Musyimi a teacher who gave it a trial said the app is good but the major challenge is that many teachers are analog.
