Campaign in schools to add traditional rope-jump game into official co-curricular sport

Teachers of all levels have been asked to diversify their extra co- curricular activities to enable their learners to have a wider choice of activities to indulge in during their youth for their mental and physical development.

While appreciating the commonly practiced sports and games like athletics and ball matches in schools, the Kenya Jump rope Federation President Lydiah Aswani recommended jump rope for learners of all ages in schools because it is easy to train, learn as it requires less training tools.

“This is a very easy and attracting game to train and I encourage all teachers for games in schools to embrace it,” she said.

The Federation President was speaking to teachers in Kisii County when she took her team around some schools in the county to sensitize the public about the importance of Jump rope which is regarded as a new game but has stayed with communities for more than a century.

Aswani cautioned teachers against discouraging male students from training in the jump rope game asking them to shed off the notion that the game is a preserve of females.

“Anyone who interested can train in the game because it does not have limits for gender or age, what matters is one’s passion to succeed in it,” she said

The President said her office is open to those who will like to contact her for technical advice on how to introduce the game in their institutions.

She also tabulated a few steps to be followed by trainers when they are introducing jump rope to their learners as identifying a safe ground without sharp objects, having a good rope and willingness for trainees to participate.

She asked Physical fitness trainers in schools to introduce their learners to the game because it agrees with the requirements of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) as a subject that is examined in Kenyan Junior Secondary Schools exams.

She instructed teachers and parents to be on the watch and seize any available education development opportunity to enrich their children to compete favorably with their colleagues in the world.

She said that 7 members of her team will travel to Japan to participate in the World Jump Championship.

“We were supposed to travel to France last year for Jump rope World Championship but we lacked in this year we are sure of travelling to Japan for the completions and we hope to raise the Kenyan flag here there and when we return home with success,” she said.

She added that the competitions will start on 28th July and end on 3rd in Japan.

During their visit to Kisii County the team thrilled the crowds at various venues including Humphrey Hill House Hotel and Schools like Bobaracho and Kereri Girls High School.

 

The director of Humphreys Hotel Moses Okemwa promised to partner with Kenya jump rope Federation to promote the game in rural schools.

“We will start with our neighbouring school Bobaracho secondary school because already had a foothold with them in Drama and Music training which are doing well.”He said.

Engineer Okemwa asked parents to develop a special link of communicating with teachers and other interested individuals and groups in education to find the best ways of assisting their children to identify their careers early in life and remain focused to achieve them.

“All children are not the same that is why parents need engage different approaches to meet different tates in each child’s personality.”He said.

Former Kisii County director of Culture,Sports and Social Services Nyambane Obino said the rope jump is a commendable cultural game that is timeless in society.

He said it is one of the games to be practiced in school especially in the lower primary schools because it provides foundations for socialization and bonding among among the curious growing pupils .

In this game who main characteristics is determination and endurance,teachers can use it to teach patience among their pupils and identify future leaders from the interactions.
