Cabinet Secretary for Health urged to extend deworming campaigns in schools

Kakamega County Deputy Governor (DG) Ayub Savula has urged Cabinet Secretary for Health Deborah Mulongo to extend deworming campaigns in schools.

As it was her mission, she launched the 12 Rounds of the national school-based deworming campaign in July this year. The CS visited Malava Level 4 Hospital recently to reflect on the progress made in the implementation of strategies and delivery of Primary Health Care (PHC) and the launch of deworming campaigns.

“Am happy that today we are launching a community deworming campaign targeting intestinal worms, bilharzia and I encourage everyone to participate.” CS  Mulongo said.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Kakamega Deputy Governor (DG) Ayub Savula highlighted that schools are the areas in which Community Health Promoters (CHPs) can play a key role.

The DG said this programme will improve the health and enhance the learning abilities of children by effectively addressing parasitic worm infections.

“The County government in partnership with AMREF will work towards the reducing of parasitic worms, breaking the circle of transmission within schools and communities.” The DG said.

Savula extended his gratitude to all partners including AMREF and the national government for their contribution to the health sector.

The Global CEO of AMREF Health Africa Dr. Githinji Gitahi said CHPs will be visiting schools, households and other public gatherings to ensure maximum coverage.

Dr. Gitahi highlighted that AMREF partnering with the government is yielding impressive outcomes which are transforming healthcare delivery in the Western region

” When you think about CHPs are doing an amazing job assisting individuals to understand the meaning of Social Health Authority (SHA) and registering them in their houses.” He revealed.

“I remember when we were here with the CS at the beginning of October, less than 5 per cent had registered into SHA but today we are seeing it’s between 14-15 per cent and that number is rising.” Dr Gitahi exclaimed.

He acknowledged the work the CHPs are doing towards health and gave AMREF a commitment to continue supporting CHPs.
