The Butere Girls High School soccer team, popularly known as the Red Commandos, received a significant morale boost on Sunday, July 20,2025 after being gifted new soccer balls by renowned Mumias-based businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Bonface Ngashira, founder of the Ngashira Care Foundation.

The team, a three-time national champion, is set to represent the Western Region at the upcoming Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Championships, which kick off next week in Kakamega County.

Speaking during his visit to the school playground on Sunday, Ngashira praised the girls for their outstanding performance during the recently concluded Western Region games held in Mumias.

“Their electric performance caught the attention of many sports lovers, including myself. Talents pay—many young people have made it through sports. I urge these girls to remain committed and disciplined. I’ll be back before they depart for the nationals to motivate them in a special way,” said Ngashira.

The team’s manager, Tom Ojenge, acknowledged the pressure of defending a national title but expressed confidence in the squad’s preparation.

“We know the expectations are high, but we’ve put in the work. Balancing academics and sports is never easy, but the unwavering support from our Chief Principal has made it possible,” Ojenge noted.

Head Coach Edwin Sakwa assured supporters that the team is in peak condition and ready to put on a strong show at the nationals.

“We’ve managed to avoid injuries, and some of our key players who were rested during regionals will return for the nationals. With Kakamega hosting the event, there’s no way a team from this county won’t rise to the occasion,” said Sakwa.

He also extended his gratitude to Mr. Ngashira for his generous support.

“This kind of encouragement boosts the girls’ morale. We are truly grateful.”

Several players from the Butere Girls squad are part of the Kenya U-17 national team pool, with more hopeful of being scouted during the nationals.

The Ngashira Care Foundation continues to make a significant impact across the region through its charitable initiatives, including support for local schools.

The national championships will feature top teams from across the country. Kakamega County will be represented by Musingu School (the Scorpions) and Butere Girls (the Red  Commandos)
